Community involvement in support services

The Strathcarron Project is registered to provide housing support, care at home and support services to adults and older people in Lochcarron, Ross-shire, and the surrounding area.

Housing support and care at home services are provided to the tenants living within specified sheltered housing accommodation. The Support Service provides day care for up to 40 adults and older people living within the areas of Lochcarron, Applecross, Shieldaig and Torridon.

All of the services are managed from the Howard Doris Centre in Lochcarron. The service aims to encourage people to maximise their physical, intellectual and emotional potential. It also provides a valuable community resource.

Manager Sally Ross explained: "We do activities that people in the community will come in and take part in and we involve our clients in the day-to-day running of the service. Before the Howard Doris Centre was here, a lot of elderly people had to leave the area and move to a nursing home further afield - leaving their friends, family and everything that they've known behind them.  So we can slow down that process because of all the services we provide and we get to know people very well because of all the things we can do for them."

Jan, who uses the centre, said: "I'm not joking, if this wasn't here I'd have to move away because you're on your own up here.  I come here everyday and if I didn't have this place to come to, I'd have nobody.  My family live far away. And I've always said from away back - I'd never [rely] on my children when I was old.  They've got their own lives to live."

At the time of filming, Inspector Lynn O’Donnell added: "The project provides a wide range of opportunities and ways in which the tenants and clients can participate and be involved in all aspects of the service. It promotes a wide range of stimulating, interesting and engaging activities that people who attend can benefit from both within and out with the service. Everyone we spoke to spoke very highly of the committed, enthusiastic and skilled staff."

We publish regular inspection reports for all care services - and grades can go up and down depending on what we see. The effective practice we see here should always be read in conjunction with the latest inspection report.
