Encouraging Early Years Participation

Located in a residential area in the west of Edinburgh, The Murrayfield Nursery looks after up to 83 children aged 0 to primary school age. It provides an early year's day care service and works with City of Edinburgh Council to provide pre-school education.

The nursery's vision is: "To provide your child with the best start, recognising each child as an individual with their right to achieve his/her full potential through positive learning and teaching experiences."

Murrayfield 3Maxine Simpson-Smith, manager, explained: "We have 27 staff - the majority of whom have been here a long time so we have really good continuity of care. You see when you go around; the ethos of the nursery is a happy, fun environment to be. We promote challenging play for the children. All ideas come from the children. They take complete ownership of their learning.

It's very evident throughout the nursery from babies - right through to the older children, that there's a real continuity of children's learning."

Parent Collette outlined why she chose the nursery for her two children. "The reason we chose the Murrayfield was because it really stood out as having a fantastic induction process. When we looked around for a prospective nursery, the Murrayfield was the only one that showed us every room, for every stage of our child's development so we could see how they would grow from a baby, to a toddler, to a child that was ready and able to go to school."

At the last inspection, Inspector Pamela Cormack noted that some of the older children in the playrooms were very focused in their play and confidently approached staff with ideas and suggestions to extend activities.

At the time of filming, Pamela said: "I was really impressed with the innovative way in which the children participated and directed their own learning. For example, they showed the children the newspaper each morning, which then grew arms and legs resulting in the children developing 'talking, thinking floor books'. This was a theme throughout the nursery, from babies to pre-school children. The older children were totally responsible for instigating a subject and directing it. The amount of participation from the children was excellent."

Murrayfield 4We publish regular inspection reports for all care services - and grades can go up and down depending on what we see. The effective practice we see here should always be read in conjunction with the latest inspection report.
