Supporting homeless people to get back on their feet

Cunninghame Housing Association provides housing support in purpose-built hostel accommodation at Victoria House, Irvine.

The project provides short stay, temporary accommodation, housing support, information and advice to homeless people in North Ayrshire. Victoria House has 27 bedrooms and caters for a diverse client base including children, families, young singles and older people.

Tenancies can last a few days to a few weeks and, very occasionally, longer. It provides homeless individuals and families with accurate, constructive housing advice to help them assess all the options available to them to resolve their homelessness.

Manager, Alex Kirkwood, explained: "The average length of stay is about 21 days, so as people arrive, it's quite intense getting a housing support plan together and preparing that support plan so that they can take it on to the next provider and the next stage to resolving their homelessness. We've very close relationships with the local authority and this partnership working seems to be the key to resolving homelessness for people."

Sonia, temporary resident, said: "It's a chance to get back on my feet, because I'm not here for no reason… and it's not because I'm a bad person.  It's just what other people can do to you, that'll land you in situations that you never in a million years thought you would end up in. I feel safe here, secure here... and happy."

Annabel, support worker, added: "When people come into the hostel, they're at their lowest; they're at the bottom.  And we try to build them up, by giving the best support that we can possibly give."

We publish regular inspection reports for all care services - and grades can go up and down depending on what we see. The effective practice we see here should always be read in conjunction with the latest inspection report.
