BMA & RCN joint guidance on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) decision making.

The British Medical Association, Royal College of Nursing and the Resuscitation Council (UK) have issued new joint guidance on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) decision making. The Guidance updates previous editions published jointly in 2001 and 2007, both often referred to as the ‘Joint Statement’.

Do not attempt cardiopulmonary rescuscitation - Integrated Adult Policy

Scottish Government guidance intended to prevent inappropriate, futile and/or unwanted attempts at CPR which may cause significant distress to patients and families, as a death with an inappropriate CPR attempt may be undignified and traumatic. This guidance replaces the 2010 version.

Care of dying adults in the last days of life

NICE guidelines which aim to improve care for people at the end of their life. The guidelines “aim to put the dying person at the heart of decisions about their care, so that they can be supported in their final days in accordance with their wishes.” The guidelines include advice on how to manage common symptoms without causing “unacceptable side effects and maintain hydration in the last days of life.”
