Child-led planning: Creating Meaningful Experiences
Planning for every child involves creating rich, challenging, and meaningful learning experiences, building on their individual talents, interests and needs.
Child-led Planning helps you to consider and provide specific experiences and outcomes in order to develop and support every child’s needs and support them to achieve their full potential.
This course aims to give childminders the support needed to:
- Explore how planning can support children’s development and enrich their experience.
- Explore Child-Led Planning and individual care plans.
- Enhance your own enjoyment, satisfaction, and confidence in a job well done.
Key learning during this course includes understanding and explaining:
- The stages of child development and principles of Child-Led Planning and how to take account of these when planning for the children.
- The role of a childminder when supporting children to access exciting, challenging, self directed play opportunities.
- How to create meaningful experiences for all children including children with additional support needs.
- Explain your understanding on the Curriculum for Excellence and how this works for all children within a childminding service.
- Explain how to involve children, parents and carers in your planning process.
When you have completed this course, your core knowledge and understanding will include:
- Sources of support in respect of planning and curriculum development, drawing on available best practice.
- The kinds of equipment, materials and activities that support the implementation of a learning curriculum, using play as a vehicle for delivery.
- The importance and implications of a differentiated approach to the provision of learning experiences for children.
- The meaning of personalised learning and how this affects planning and implementation of the curriculum in Scotland.
- The effects of low self-esteem and lack of confidence on learning.
- Specific issues for children’s development and learning in multilingual or bilingual settings or where children are learning through an additional language.

This includes interactive learning courses, e-Learning courses and access to webinars, network meetings, conferences and complimentary courses Taking part in these opportunities enables childminders to take responsibility for both their professional development and that of their childminding service – focusing on children, to help them achieve their full potential. We actively encourage childminders to take the opportunity to build on their knowledge, skills and professional growth throughout their career. SCMA is proud to be a SQA Approved Centre, which means that in addition to providing our own, bespoke learning opportunities, the Learn with SCMA team can also deliver SQA qualifications. The SQA qualification that we currently deliver is the Complete Childminding Learning Pathway - a Work Based Award, which is credit rated at Level 7 on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

The Quality Assurance Policy and associated procedures involves all employees, Learners and collaborative partners such as the Care Inspectorate (CI), Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and Skills Development Scotland (SDS). The quality assurance policy is managed through the existing organisational structure. The quality assurance procedures are founded in a process of regular self-evaluation by teams and internal and external audits and observations, in addition to Learner feedback and local training needs.
