Tears, Tantrums and You – Managing challenging Behaviour

The aim of this course is to improve the quality of managing challenging behaviour within a professional childcare setting. It includes discussing how to prevent tantrums whilst exploring their triggers and why some children bite.

This course aims to give childminders the support needed to:

  • Identify strategies for managing challenging behaviour.
  • Consider appropriate methods within a childminding setting. 
  • Support a personalised development plan for every child..

Key learning during this course includes understanding and explaining:

  1. Ensure that a childminding setting promotes positive behaviour.
  2. Be responsive to children’s emotions and experiences and actively encourage children’s parents and their families to be involved in decision making about your childminding environment.
  3. Organise resources for children to access.
  4. Plan activities that are inclusive and available to all children.
  5. Help children to identify the boundaries of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in themselves and others.
  6. Value diversity.

Course outcomes:

When you have completed this course, your core knowledge and understanding will include:

  1. How to demonstrate respect and value for children’s capabilities and strengths.
  2. The recognition of developmentally appropriate behaviour.
  3. How to improve the quality and provision of outdoor play.

The SQA qualification that we currently deliver is the Complete Childminding Learning Pathway - a Work Based Award, which is credit rated at Level 7 on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

Quality Assurance

SCMA are commited to ensuring that on-going quality improvement is an integral part of our organisation. The Learn with SCMA team aims for continuous improvement in the quality of all aspects of its work as part of its determination to help Learners achieve the highest possible standards.

Our Quality Assurance Policy is in place to ensure such continuous improvement through a process of self-evaluation and action planning. The Quality Assurance Policy and associated procedures involves all employees, Learners and collaborative partners such as the Care Inspectorate (CI), Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and Skills Development Scotland (SDS). The quality assurance policy is managed through the existing organisational structure. The quality assurance procedures are founded in a process of regular self-evaluation by teams and internal and external audits and observations, in addition to Learner feedback and local training needs.
